The Fonz is backing Barack. Aaaaaaaayyyyyyy!!

See more Ron Howard videos at Funny or Die

Once again the folks at Funny or Die have come up with a sidesplitting video. But this time it's all about your future, folks. Would Opie Cunningham steer you wrong? Not a chance.

Big Bang Theory

We got off to such a good start here. And now, not so much. In my defense, I'm about to leave for Nashville and spend my fourth weekend in a row in a hotel. What millennial girl has time to blog when she's on the road so much? Thank heavens I don't have a job that requires travel. I'd never get anything done! Speaking of which, duty calls. I must get some actual work done before we head out. T-minus three hours and counting. Then Music City, here I come.

Joe Six Pack, this Maverick's for you!

Due to my inability to actually complete any blog posts so far in the month of October (though I'm VERY good at writing half-posts!), I submit the following for my, um, I mean your viewing pleasure.

ETA: I just watched this for the third time, and I still snorted in laughter. I heart Tina Fey. She's playing me in the movie, you know.

So you think you can write?

“The Mentalist” premiered on ABC last night, and I was right there in front of the 50-inch, lapping up every drop of eye candy that is Simon Baker. He was Australtastic!

But the writers did us a disservice by trying to cram too much of his character, Patrick Jane’s, backstory into the pilot. It’s called character development, folks, and these things take time. You can’t do it all in an hour, and why would you want to? Give us a reason to want to keep watching, needing to know more about Jane’s past. Of course, there is lots more to know about him still, but really, I think we learned more than was prudent last night. The major plotlines in the pilot could have easily been spread out over three episodes.

First, the opening scenes where Jane solves the murder of a teenage girl at the hands of her father: All party tricks, with not so much to support it and make us believe the sleuthing was plausible. Give me that whole story over a full-length show, let Jane spout his mental wisdom, then show me how he came to his conclusion. Ep 1 in the can, and suddenly, I am intrigued, and wonder how he came by this gift with the few morsels you shared (or would have, had you actually done things my way) about his past.

Ep 2, Patrick Jane is back from the suspension handed out at the conclusion of the prior show (not minutes before, as we saw last night), and now we learn of Red John. Here’s where things start to get interesting, and you drop me a few more clues about Jane’s past. He solves the crime, we marvel at his skill, and we know him a little better. But we do NOT need the flirting and sexual tension and what-all with the boss lady, Teresa Lisbon (Robin Tunney). Why in heaven’s name would you alternately tell me about the man’s wife being murdered in one scene and have his fellow agent all googly-eyed over him in the next? I. Need. A. Progression. Here. Let me get to know these people first. PLEASE!

Ep 3, Here’s where we see Patrick Jane’s personal experience with Red John. The discovery, the aftermath. Would even have been great if we’d seen the bare mattress on the bedroom floor in a prior ep without knowing why (but not the wall – save that for ep 3). And tie it all in to the new case our new fave detective is solving in this installment.

All that aside, I did enjoy the show (could you even tell?), just thought it could have been done soooo much better. The writers gave Jane some great lines, though they were woven into that weak script and came off as non-sequiturs. Work harder, folks. When you give Simon Baker that choice material, he shines. I want to see that from start to finish.

Has Hell Frozen Over???

This past week has been pretty crazy in the news department. The US economy has been alternatively broken and fixed and broken and ? The presidential race has the candidates doing a lot of posturing and finger pointing but very little discussion of substance. In the human interest category two music stars, DJ AM and Travis Barker were critically injured in a plane crash that took the lives of 4 others. Meanwhile the hottest names on the television screen came out to LA and proceeded to bore the pants off of the American public to the point where even this entertainment junkie decided to turn it off about an hour into it. In these dark times this entertainment junkie turned to the beloved entertainment mags to lift my spirits. And Oh MY GOD, what do I find as I turn to people.com........

OMG Lance is gay? Say it ain't so. I could NOT have seen that coming in a million or so years. Has Hell frozen over?

Oh wait that was 2 years ago. Since then he's had a relationship with Reichen from the Amazing Race that I know of, and he may be in one now. Fantastic. And of course this season he's also on Dancing With the Stars. After one viewing he's probably my second favorite behind Misty May Treanor. I think she's awesome, but probably more for personality than anything else. Plus c'mon she and Kerri Walsh pretty much rule. But Lance, I mean he has that whole boy band thing going on. And he's a cutie. Those eyes....wait, he's gay?! I just hope Justin Timberlake shows up at some point to show support for "his boy". Hey a girl can dream right?

Which leads me back to my dreams being crushed due to people.com.....

OMG Clay is gay? Say it ain't so. I could NOT have seen that coming in a million or so years. Has Hell frozen over?

Oh sweet Clay. Clay of the American Idol "claymate" fans. Clay of the glasses. Clay of the second place to Ruben Studdard. Clay who has fought rumors of being gay since then. The sensitive side of me is really happy that he can be himself and not have to pretend to be something that he is not. How tiresome and sad for him. The catty side of me wonders why People magazine, which is one of my favorites, would choose to almost duplicate the Lance cover. "I'M GAY" versus "YES, I'M GAY". Same large font. Same sympathetic portrait, only Clay has his sweet baby as well. I'm sure the article will be heartwarming, and I don't doubt for one moment that Clay has faced some personal battles his whole life and especially over the last few years, and I'm so happy that he decided to have a child. I think he'll be a good dad. I'm glad he's finally out and can live his life freely and hopefully he got a nice little check for agreeing to do the interview and pictures. Good for him. I guess I just question why or how this is breaking news. Especially since 2 years ago we saw virtually the same cover with Lance. Oh well whatevs. I'll still buy it and read every single sentence. Thanks People for making me realize I'll buy whatever you feed me.

New TV shows? It's sofa city, sweetheart!

I'm nearly giddy with anticipation as I await the fall season premieres on TV this week. How ridiculous is it that this excites me so much? Probably not nearly as insane as my summerlong obsession with ABC’s “The Bachelorette,” so I’m giving myself a pass on this one. I'll admit to being a bit of a TV junkie. I have no defense other than that I just plain love it. And I'll watch almost anything.

Gimme some "CSI: Miami," "NCIS" and "Law & Order: SVU" and I'm there, slurping up that big bowl of alphabet soup that is the modern cop/crime drama. This season, I'll be adding the awesome Aussie Simon Baker to the mix in his new show "The Mentalist," which looks to be a smart and edgy new twist on the genre. He's been a fave of mine since starring in "The Guardian" with Dabney Coleman a few years back, and I loved him on the big screen in "Something New" and "The Devil Wears Prada." Now let's hope the show's writers can step up the writing and match his on-screen sizzle; unfortunately, the reviews for I've read for the season premiere are somewhat lackluster and that doesn't bode well. The world needs more Simon Baker and his dead-on American accent. I'm thrilled that CBS agrees with me, at least for the time being.

On the reality front, I think it's going to be "Survivor: Gabon" on CBS for me this fall. The west central African environment looks to be just as challenging for the contestants as anything host Jeff Probst will throw at them, though I haven't read much about the season yet. I'm predicting an earlier than expected ouster for Marcus, the doctor, and I hope the Survivors have the good sense to keep Gillian, the most senior woman, around longer than we anticipate. I am somewhat underwhelmed with this season's offering on ABC's "Dancing with the Stars." I'll watch, but I can't promise I'll enjoy it. Except for Cloris Leachman. I plan to relish every moment the old broad is on my 50-inch flat screen. We can only hope some of her former "Facts of Life" co-stars show up to cheer her on, because there's not nearly enough Nancy McKeon and Mindy Cohn in my world. (And let's not forget the FOL Geoge Clooney connection here. Ahhh, a girl can dream!) I've decided to give "The Amazing Race" another shot this fall. I think I burned out on this a couple seasons back, but I'm hoping to revive my interest come September 28. With contestants like the tie-dye clad aging hippies Anita and Arthur and the team of middle-aged mother Toni and her Abercrombie-hot son Dallas, I don't know how I could go wrong!

Old faves that will have me queuing up with my family for ultimate power over the remote control include the 15th and final season of "ER" on NBC. The teases for the premiere have us wondering which of our favorite characters dies in the premiere episode, and the return of original and longtime cast member Noah Wyle's Dr. John Carter in addition to Shane West in the role of double amputee Dr. Ray Barnett will keep me tuned in 'til spring. I'm holding out a scintilla of hope for a sighting of Dr. Doug Ross, but I might have to get in line behind current Clooney-stalker, Ellen DeGeneres. I'll be back for more of ABC's "Grey's Anatomy" too, but they'd better give me a clear resolution on Meredith and McDreamy's relationship so we can progress to some actually compelling storylines. The back and forth of will-they-or-won't-they is getting to be a drag. If I wanted that, I'd buy seasons 1-5 of "Moonlighting" on DVD and hold my own sexual tension marathon. Or "Cheers," for that matter. Or "Remington Steele." Or "Wings." It's been done, people. Move along.

Last but not least, my new guilty pleasure: "Knight Rider" on NBC. Yeah, Kitt's a Ford Mustang and partner Mike Traceur, aka Michael Knight's son, has been manscaped, but these are good things, people. Chest hair and Pontiac Trans Ams are so '80s. I don't expect this one to last long, folks, so enjoy it while you can.
